Beijing Hui Ling is a unique Chinese not-for-profit, community organisation. Tucked away in a narrow hutong (alleyway) between the imperial parks of Bei Hai and Jingshan, they offer innovative services to youths and adults with learning disabilities and their families. Their mission is to: EMPOWER people with disabilities, EDUCATE the general public, PROMOTE social work in China, & LEAD development in NGO services.
Beijing Hui Ling provide many services including: activities and training which facilitate independence and improve daily living skills, the Three Primary Colours Art and Craft workshop where clients are taught skills they can use to gain employment and Family Group Homes, a family like setting for residents with disabilities.
Intrepid's program at Beijing Hui Ling includes: a welcome and musical performance by Hui Ling's multi-talented trainees and the delightful Mr Fang, a presentation on Hui Ling's work, an introduction to the history and life of the hutongs, tea with the trainees, a chance to try activities like diablo (giant yo-yo) or calligraphy, a courtyard tour of Hui Ling's rustic buildings and the Three Primary Colours Workshop. There is also an opportunity to purchase quality crafts supporting a worthwhile cause.
The Intrepid Foundation supports Beijing Hui Ling because of their proactive educative approach and their great sense of community, involving clients, their families and volunteers from the local community. It's teaching people to respect what people with disabilities can do, rather than what they can't and appreciate the contribution these people can make to the community. Disability services in China are very limited and Beijing Hui Ling's unique community-based style is promoting a model for future NGOs and charities.
